Big Budget Bollywood Movies Which Flopped So Badly That It Probably Made Their Producers And Audiences Cry

Bollywood always works to make its audience entertained yet sometimes it is not able too. Many times, films with even low budgets can win the hearts of the people but sometimes a movie made on a very high budget is not only able to make it up to them and flop badly. As not every filmmaker knows the art and talent of making the film a blockbuster on the shoestring budget. Mostly the films made in Bollywood are on a high budget. Still, movies like Thugs of Hindustan, Made in China were made on a very large budget but weren’t even able to win the hearts of the audience and was flopped so badly. This does not imply that every movie made on a very large budget would be a flop yet sometimes there is a vice versa too. The flopped movies not only make the producers cry because of the heavy budget invested in them but also the audience cry, who watches them. As the movies aren’t even able to convince the audience with their storylines, they become disappointed and upset to invest their money in watching such movies because of their bad storylines. And then it is worse for everyone, the producer as well as the audience.

Here are the 15 Big Budget Bollywood movies which flopped so badly that it probably made their producers and audiences cry:

1. Love Story 2050 (2008)- Directed by Harry Baweja and produced by Pammi Baweja— Love Story 2050 was a science fiction romance film. Featuring the director’s and producer’s son Harman Baweja, the film was still an epic fail. The other actors include Priyanka Chopra, Archana Puran Singh and Boran Irani were also the part of the film in the lead roles. As the film hired the VFX teams from New Zealand and Australia, it was considered and hyped that it would be a great movie because of its special effects. But the director’s plans of giving his son Harman Baweja, the dream project, failed miserably due to a useless storyline and a “senseless” script. The actor Harman was also given a title and a tag of a lookalike of Hrithik Roshan after the viewing of the film.

2. Blue (2009)- Directed and co-written by Anthony D’Souza and produced by Dhilin Mehta— Blue was an action-adventure film that was produced in 2009. It was featuring actors Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta and Rahul Dev. Blue was the most expensive film of 2009 as the movie had some brilliant and expensive choreography, underwater shots and a long schedule in the Bahamas but no grace! The Superstars— Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar’s budget were so hefty that it took the film’s budget overboard and it’s flimsy, no-storyline about an under-sea bounty left many disappointed. Kylie Minogue who had a short appearance in the film was also paid 6.6 crores for it and the payment to her added more, to the budget of the producers’.

3. Kites (2010)- Directed by Anurag Basu and produced and written by Rakesh Roshan— Kites was an action-romantic-thriller film of 2010. It was starring actors Kangana Ranaut, Hrithik Roshan, Kabir Bedi, Barbara Mori and Nicholas Brown. Like others, this movie was also made on a big budget but was not able to earn and cover its cost-making at last. None of the talented actors— the very known superstar or a Mexican actress or the best director itself, couldn’t save the film from being flopped. Kites was not able to make it up to the expectations of Hrithik Roshan of being into the international cinema. The superstars’ father—Rakesh Roshan even had other plans for the film. But unfortunately, he also had a cliched script. A big-budget got wasted in the project.

4. Raavan (2010)- Directed, co-written and co-produced by Mani Ratnam— Raavan was an epic adventure film of 2010, featuring actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Govinda, Ravi Kishan, Govinda, Nikhil Dwivedi and Priyamani. Raavan was made on a very huge budget. But like others, it was also an epic fail, as the loss was total of Rs 100 crores. The director was expected to make a comeback by producing this film, as it was a mega project starring the very known superstars. But the movie turned out to be a flop-show because of a sloppy script and lost more than 50% at the box office.

5. Besharam (2013)- Directed by Abhinav Kashyap and produced by Himanshu Mehra and Sanjeev Gupta— Besharam, a 2013 film was based on action-comedy type of a film. It was starring actors— Ranbir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Pallavi Sharda- who made a comeback in the Bollywood industry, Neetu Singh, Javed Jaffrey and Pranay Narayan. Besharam was also an epic fail. Looking at the son of a superstar (Rishi Kapoor) that is Ranbir Kapoor, the movie was thought to be a brilliant success. But unfortunately, it turned out to be a very poor film. The talented actor- Ranbir Kapoor’s fan following did grab the audience to the theatres but ultimately, as the movie was less in creative content, so the actor’s fans were disappointed with it. Furthermore, the movie was declared an absolute let down. It wasn’t even able to manage the covering cost of its budget and ending up collecting such a less amount than its actual budget.

6. Waiting (2015)- Directed by Anu Menon and produced by Priti Gupta and Manish Mundra— Waiting was a drama film of 2015. It was featuring actors Kalki Koechlin, Naseeruddin Shah, Arjun Mathur, Rajat Kapoor and Suhasini Maniratnam. A movie starring the most talented actors Kalki Koechlin and Naseeruddin Shah was still not able to make it up to the audience and was flopped badly. The movie was a pretty poignant message about death and the cyclical state of our healthcare system. But it still wasn’t able to make its money back.

7. Bombay Velvet (2015)- Directed and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap—Bombay velvet was a crime-thriller kind of a film. The film featured actors Ranbir Kapoor, Karan Johar, Anushka Sharma and Kay Kay Menon. Bombay velvet was a very epic fail as the cost of the filmmaking i.e. the budget of the film was so high and the collection at the box office was so less (very minimal). The gap between the two was a lot and therefore the movie was declared as an epic failure and a flop movie. This was another big flop of 2015 among others. It became a scar in the career of the director. The film was rejected so badly that it had a loss of roundabout 100 crores and was the biggest flop of 2015, in the history of Bollywood. The very non-talented actors would also have preferred to disown this disaster.

8. Shaandaar (2015)- Directed by Vikas Bahl and produced by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane— Shaandaar was a rom-com film that was being both romantic as well as comedy. It was featuring actor’s Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor in the main roles. Like the other’s, Shaandaar was also a very big fail in the Bollywood industry. It too had a very great loss. The film was expected for its best and was the most awaited movie of 2015 but because of its no-script the movie could not be saved and it just took a day to fall very badly.

9. Meri Pyaari Bindu (2017)- An Indian comedy romantic film, directed by Akshay Roy, produced by Aditya Chopra and Maneesh Sharma and written by Suprotim Sengupta— Meri Pyaari Bindu was a 2017 film. It was starring actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra. Love stories with sad endings don’t work well with people and that’s why the movie flopped. Meri Pyaari Bindu was made on a very large budget but wasn’t able to collect and cover its filmmaking cost. It had 100 millions of difference between the actual cost and the cost earned. And was further declared a very flop film.

10. Pataakha (2018)- Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and produced by Vishal Bharadwaj himself and Rekha Bhardwaj— Pataakha was a Hindi comedy-drama film which was also amongst the list of the flop movies. It was featuring actors Sanya Malhotra, Radhika Madan, Vijay Raaz and Sunil Grover. The movie was based on a story of two sisters and their relationship with each other i.e. they were in a difficult relationship with each other. Patakha movie was, as usual, a flop movie and was not able to cover its filmmaking cost. The director usually was giving hits earlier as he has adapted Shakespeare’s based stories (storylines) but unlike others, this movie wasn’t a hit. Whereas, his movies that weren’t adapted from Shakespeare’s storylines, wasn’t a hit and wouldn’t even able to connect to its audience. The film was displayed well by the female actors Sanya Malhotra and Radhika Madan, as they showcased their talents well. Adding to that, Vijay Raaz and Sunil Grover’s performance was also very realistic, comedy and brilliant and somehow the movie was a mix of a “masala” film but unfortunately, nobody saw the movie and it wasn’t able to grab many audience to the theatres. And was further declared a flop movie.

11. Manmarziyaan (2018)- Directed by Anurag Kashyap and produced by Kanika Dhillon— Manmarziyaan a 2018 film was a Hindi language romantic drama movie which featured the actors Taapsee Pannu, Abhishek Bachchan and Vicky Kaushal in their main lead roles. Director Anurag Kashyap is known well for his superhits but this film gave his career a setback. Though the movie had a great and honest portrayal of the fickle mindset of our generation. But still the audience didn’t like it well and therefore made it a flop. The film was made on a minimal budget of some crores but wasn’t even able to cover its cost. Despite the failure of the movie, its songs were still streaming well on some well-known apps.

12. Mukkabaaz (2018)- Directed, co-produced and co-written by Anurag Kashyap— Mukkabaaz was an Indian sports drama film of 2018. The movie was featuring actors Zoya Hussain, Vineet Kumar Singh, Jimmy Sheirgill and Ravi Kishan. The director is known well for giving hits but this time again, he setback because of this film. The movie has some great direction, acting, cinematography, editing and songs. Still, it wasn’t able to make its audience happy and was a flop. The film had some best-choreographed fight sequences and also gave a gut-wrenching message for the country but wasn’t able to manage the cost covering for its budget.

13. Kalank (2019)- Directed by Abhishek Varman and co-produced by Karan Johar— Kalank a Hindi/drama film was amongst the most opulent films that Bollywood has made. The total budget of the movie landed up to Rs 150 crore. Whereas, the total amount earned was estimated to be Rs 146.31 crore. Because of some reason, the audience couldn’t connect to the film, and the box office figures shown were very less than the actual budget. This was hard for the film as well as the for the superstars starring in it, who were Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kunal Khemu and Sanjay Dutt. The movie was not a hit. Actor Varun Dhawan was disappointed with his first failure in the film industry, still managed to overcome with his positive attitude and welcomed the failure too for the big success later on.

14. Panga (2020)- Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and produced by Fox Star Studios— Panga is a 2020 released Sports/Drama movie. The film was starring actors Jassi Gill, Kangana Ranaut, Neena Gupta and Richa Chaddha. Featuring the most talented and fan-followed actress Kangana Ranaut, the film still wasn’t able to be a hit and rather was a flop. The storyline of the movie was based on Sports and the most discussed topic of the decade that is women empowerment. The budget on which the movie was made was a little high but could not manage to collect as much expected, at the box office and was an epic fail.

15. Thappad (2020)- Directed by Anubhav Sinha and co-produced by Bhushan Kumar— Thappad is a drama film which was released this year (2020). Watching movie— Article 15 of Anubhav Sinha, the movie Thappad was also thought and expected, to be the one which would connect with all and everyone’s going to flock to the theatre to watch it. But nothing of that sort happened, as later on, after its release it was seen that it would barely manage to make its money back. The movie was starring the very known versatile actor Taapsee Pannu in it. It was a flop because of the storyline and that it wasn’t able to convey the message to its audience. It was not a hit-screenplay by the director.

Bollywood never fails to impress its audience with its most brilliant movies but these were some that weren’t able to make it up to the audience and could convince them or make them happy. Such movies add a little scar to the industry with their setbacks but Bollywood will never try to let the industry down and would come back with something good and big later on, to cover these scars up!
